In her first appearance in goal, Kate led a resurgent defense to a tight 2-0 win over our friends on Tsunami Naranja. It was our fourth shut out of the season, not including the forfeit win over 2LF.
Teamwork!
I thought the game was close until the final whistle. Tsunami plays the coed game like it's meant to be played - with sportsmanship and reliance on all 11 players to get a result. They have a lot of good versatile, unselfish players. We probably had the better chances, but it wasn't until relatively late in the second half that we finally got the break we needed. In fact, after missing out on yet another PK opportunity versus Tsunami, and getting just a little lucky on some of Brian's shots and #12's moves, I think we showed resolve.
Offensive summary:
* In the 40', Chris earned a PK opportunity by shooting the ball directly at the last man.
* In the 65', Ermy muscled his way to a through ball from Chris and then beat the last two defenders for the score.
* In about the 70', Nate produced a screamer that bounced off, way off, the near post.
* In the 75', Ermy dribbled at the top of box and layed a nice pass off to Jackie, who first-timed a nice left footed shot for her first goal of the season.

i can think of a couple things not in the offensive summary. Jer had 2-3 great opportunities - one off his chest, and two low percentage shots that he nearly sunk with good placement (a chip over the goalie and a bender to the far post).

Actually, your picture on the post shows the correct person to credit for the assist for Ermy's goal - it was Chris' through ball.
ReplyDeleteyep, I'm bruised from running into Jer to louse up his hard shot from the top of the box that would have teased the far post, and Jer had a great chip opportunity that their first half goalie made a great save on - he was good (he saved my shot that would have hit upper 90) - when they subbed him out of goal they lost a bit of their edge.
Ermy gave me the square ball at the top of the box for my first shot - and almost from the same position - Jackie gave me the square ball for my shot that hit the post.
In the future if we have Kate in goal (great job Kate!), let's stick with the 3-5-2 and have two guys on the out side - we just play so much better in the 3-5-2 and are able to utilize all 11 of our players more effectively. The second goal was scored after Jackie won the ball in the middle - passed out to Jon on the left defensive midfield - Jon passed it out to Ermy on the far left as a forward - Ermy dribbled it in to find Jackie in the center. My two cents.
oh yeah! and thanks for bringing up that painful memory for me - missing the PK against Tsunami in my inaugural season as a Golero

Nate - I agree, Tsunami shouldn't have switched keepers. What they were doing was working. Their central mid (Terry) and the starting keeper were at their highest use in the first half. The keeper was doing great. When he took over in the midfield, they lost their finesse and ability to quickly play to #12. Their first half lineup was working and was bound to result in a goal sooner or later.
ReplyDeleteThey need to play that guy Brian as a sweeper. When he gets in on offense, he can make some hard shots.
