Captains make schedule requests for spring

League officers have said they will release a full schedule several weeks before the season starts.  While this would be unprecedented in our five years in the league, the schedule has run smoothly as of late due to an abundance of premium fields.

In response to my email, Goleros teammates indicate that they could be traveling a lot this spring.  That could make attendance a bit dicey.  The problem week at this point looks to be the CUA Alumni game on April 22nd.  We have requested a bye that weekend and I expect it to be accommodated.  We have also asked for a late start on April 1st, which could be the second round of the Cherry Blossom Tournament.

Season to start Sunday March 18th

Hi team -As reported earlier on this blog, our season starts in exactly 60 days.  The offseason isn't so long anymore.  Get ready!

Final game set: we play at 9:00 p.m. this Sunday!

Ladies and gentlemen, our last game of the season has been scheduled, and in fact, it will be the last game played this fall in the whole league.

We play Our Kicks Don't Lie at 9:00 p.m. this Sunday Nov. 20th at George Mason High School in Falls Church.

I have requested a late start time for the game.  Kickoffs are at 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, and 9:00 p.m.  Look for us to get the 7:00 or 9:00 slot, but we'll see.  No word on the field, but I'm guessing George Mason in Falls Church.

Semifinal match scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday

The schedule has been posted for our semi-final matchup versus DC Divided. 

We play at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at Galludet U. 

RSVP and roster-building will start immediately.  Look for emails.

DC Divided Advances to Face Goleros

According to the CCSL website, DC Divided has beaten Unathletic DC by a score of 3-1.  That means they will face us in the semi-finals next week.  The game will be on Sunday, but the time and place are still TBD.

Playoff schedule still TBD

While the league has already established a schedule for the Quarters, it has not made any announcements about Semis or Finals.  Remember, we have a bye so we're off this week for the Quarters.

Stay tuned, we might not hear until early next week.  Keep open all of Sunday for our critical semi-final match.

Game moves to Ridge, but same time (10:00 a.m.)

Trinity College canceled all games on its field so our game was moved.  The kickoff time remains at 10:00 a.m. but now the game will be played at Ridge field at 800 Ridge Road, SE.

Traffic will be difficult that morning due to the marathon, which starts at 8:00 a.m..  See below for multiple road closures.  I-395 is a safe bet.  In Arlington, avoid Lee Highway, Rt. 110, and parts of Wilson Blvd.  The Key Bridge will be closed.  In the District, avoid Rock Creek, Constitution, Independence, Canal Road, MacArthur Blvd, and parts of 14th street.  Don't forget that Pennsylvania Ave, SE, in Anacostia remains under construction and so on these church mornings it takes a while to get through the area to the field.  Leave early.

"I'm excited about the game," Adrian told me today.  That's an accurate sentiment because this is a title match!  If we win, we will be in first place in the division, at least until the afternoon when FC Arlington will have the opportunity to take first as well.  But regardless, there is a payout for the win, as we would get a bye in the playoffs.

The race begins at 8:00 am in Arlington, Virginia, and then crosses the Potomac River into the District of Columbia. MPD in conjunction with U.S. Park Police will close numerous streets along the race route beginning at 6:00 am and should reopen them by 1:30 pm:

Arlington Closures

These roads in Arlington will be affected at the following times:

4:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

• Eastbound Washington Boulevard will be closed at I-395 towards Memorial Bridge.

4:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

• Route 110 will be closed in both directions to all traffic.
• N. Meade Street will be closed from Fairfax Drive to Marshall Drive
• There will be no access to Lynn Street or Meade Street from Route 50.
• N. Lynn Street, from Route 50 to N. 19th Street, will be closed.
• Ft. Meyer Drive will be closed from 19th Street to Route 50.
• N. Moore Street, from 19th Street to Wilson Boulevard, will be closed.
• Wilson Boulevard will be closed east of N. Nash Street.

4:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

• Westbound Washington Boulevard from Memorial Circle to I-395 will be closed.

7:15 a.m.-11:15 a.m.

• Eastbound Lee Highway, from Kirkwood Road to N. Lynn Street will be closed.
• Westbound Lee Highway, from N. Scott Street to Kirkwood Road will be closed to thru traffic (local traffic will have egress by taking Scott Street to Veitch Street. Citizens leaving the area can use westbound Lee Highway to Spout Run and exit the area via the George Washington Parkway).

7:15 a.m. - 12:00 noon

• The Key Bridge will be closed.

7:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

• The southbound I-395 HOV lanes from Washington, D.C. will be closed.

7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

• 12th Street South from Eads Street to Crystal Drive (local traffic permitted in one lane from Eads Street to Army Navy Drive) Traffic is encouraged to avoid this route as intermittent closures will occur.  Use S. 15^th Street to access hotels.
• Crystal Drive will be closed from 12th Street to 23rd Street.
• Rotary Road will be closed throughout Pentagon South parking.
• Columbia Pike will be closed at Joyce Street (access Pentagon via Boundary Channel).

7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

• Army Navy Drive will be closed from Fern Street to S. 12th Street.

Game time unclear now

The scheduling saga continues folks.  According to the exec team feed that I am seeing, the Trinity College folks have proactively canceled all games this weekend because the field has been so beaten up during the week.  So I can tell you that our game will be rescheduled yet again.  The league is looking into new times and locations.  I will send an email around when we have certainty.  I would keep open that 8:00 a.m. slot if I were you.  We could end up having to move back there.

New time and place for Sunday's game [updated]

As you've seen from email and the text network, our game this week has been moved to 10:00 a.m. at Trinity.

We need to pay attention to details this week [UPDATED]

Congratulations, everyone, we made the playoffs.  We missed them last season so it's nice to be back.  So make sure you mark on your calendars the next 3 weekends.  We could have matches on Sundays.

BUT...before you do that, we must close the regular season out.  The little things will be important this week.  We have another freakishly early game (8:00 a.m.!).  This one just isn't fair.  We've already had an 8:00 a.m. game this season.  But it's on the sked and it ain't moving.  My guess is that it was put there because we're playing the Commissioner's team.  The scheduler is probably used to shafting the Commissioner so that he gets fewer complaints from the other teams.  We need to show up.  And it's going to be a challenge.  We've got Halloween parties, weddings, etc, the night before.  Not to mention the traffic closures for the Marathon that morning (subject of future post).  We'll need a herculean effort to bring it together.

Why is it important?

Because we are playing for a lot.  First and foremost, we want a bye in the playoffs.  We have historically done quite well when we have a bye.  That's going to be important since we're not likely to finish first.  To keep our promotion hopes alive, we'll need to win the playoffs for the first time ever.  If we lose this weekend, we'll fall to third place in the final standings.  That's not satisfying given the number of goals we've scored and our momentum.  Furthermore, we'll give up that "tiebreaker" of sorts. Recall from a previous post that if FC Arlington wins the regular season and the playoffs, the next team to be considered for promotion is the 2nd place finisher in the regular season.  That's got to be us, not DC Divided.

We also have happy hour this week.  That's a detail that will be easy to remember!

Playoff schedule taking shape

Check out the playoff schedule.  Games start Nov. 6th and go through Nov. 20th.  Mark your calendars!

The Fall regular season is coming down to the final couple of weekends and Ive had a couple of inquiries about playoffs. 

 

Since we are needing our makeup weekend this year, the schedule plan for playoffs will be as follows:

 

Quarterfinals: Sunday November 6^th

Semifinals: Sunday November 13^th

Finals: Sunday November 20^th

 

Also heres a reminder about how playoffs work:

 

• Top 6 teams in each division make the playoffs
• Top 2 seeds get a first round bye
• 3 seed plays 6 seed and 4 seed plays 5 seed in the quarterfinals
• There is no reseeding (ala NHL) and in the semis, 1 seed plays the winner of 4/5 game and the 2 seed plays the winner of the 3/6 game
• According to our Constitution, In the event of two or more teams sharing the same number of points in the final standings, the following criteria, in order of priority, will be used:

1)     head-to-head

2)     goal differential (goals scored minus goals allowed)

3)     goals for

4)     most wins

5)     least forfeitures

6)     most shutouts

7)   coin toss

8)   Rock/Paper/Scissors

• Note that our website unfortunately does not handle the head to head tiebreaker, so the standing displayed may not be correct per our rules.
• Only players on the official roster previously submitted to our registrar are allowed to play
• IDs WILL be checked against rosters prior to the games during playoffs

Makeup game scheduled for Sunday October 30th

Please make an immediate note.  The game that was rained out earlier this season has been rescheduled.  I can't believe my eyes.  It's another 8:00 am game.

8:00 a.m. Sunday October 30th at Galludet.

Save the date!  It will be a key game.  It could be the game that decides our playoff and or promotion spot - if we can continue the winning streak.

Notes on the Schedule

Don't forget, there are several fixtures on our calendar this season that have not been finalized.  We will have a makeup on October 30th that has yet to be scheduled.  We are also hoping to make the playoffs, which will begin the following week.  All of those dates and times are to be determined.

Save the date.  We're having a good season and we want to have players available to finish it out!

At last, we play.  This season has taken FOREVER to start.  We're going to have to deal with that and be ready for the opening whistle at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday night.

Our first fixture versus Two Left Feet was a dud.  The other team forfeited.  We collected a 3-0 win on the books but it doesn't mean squat because we didn't break in the boots.

The game this weekend is versus FC Arlington, a new team in the division.  It's a wildcard game, I cannot say for sure what to expect.  We are planning to face a seriously good team, and that is more likely than not anyway.  FC Arlington jumped over from the less organized and less competitive S Leagues.  They likely had their fill in that league and were looking for more.  Like this team, but 5 years later, they are ready for more and will probably be on the rise.  Expect them to be one of the best teams in the division.

The next week we start a 2-game stand at Galludet University.  It's a nice enough field I guess.  The first afternoon game will be nice.  The next week, at the crack of 8:00 a.m., won't 

be.  Don't even think about it.  You're showing up.

The last three games will be trying, but the field selection is nice.  Two at Trinity and a third to be determined (our make up game).  Far Post won its first game 8-0.  Granted, they probably faced a partial squad, but clearly it's going to take several goals to beat them.  

That last game versus the Commissioner's team in DC Divided figures to be a thriller.  Most likely both teams will be playing for a top spot or a playoff spot at least.  DC Divided has beaten us before and is perfectly capable of doing it again.  Unless...

Please keep a few things in mind:

- We'll need bodies for the 8:00 a.m. game.  We aren't carrying a huge roster.

- We'll need people to be flexible for the makeup.  I don't know where or when it will be yet.

- WHEN we make the playoffs, it will go pretty deep into the fall.  If we don't finish first, and that's not something any keen manager will count on, then we'll have to win out in the playoffs.  That will require focus and attendance.  

So save those dates, please.

 

No game this week

The entire league is off this week in observance of the Labor Day holiday.  Enjoy your time off and stay fit!

Sunday's game is canceled

The league moved more quickly than expected.  In some cases, the field managers canceled all activities and in other cases the commissioner just decided to make the call.  Our game is canceled, likely to be rescheduled October 30th.  See the email note below:

As you all probably expected, the weather will indeed impact many of our games on Sunday.  I wanted to give as much notice as possible as it looks like were in for a pretty decent storm that goes beyond our "play on turf no matter what" plans.  We have to put safety first both on the pitch and getting there in the first place.

 

So all games on Trinity, Roosevelt, and SSSAS this Sunday will be postponed.  For now the evening games at GMHS are on as scheduled for Sunday. 

 

We'll likely use Oct 30th weekend for these makeups.

Game status

Irene is now a Category 3 hurricane, and in some form, she's likely to affect Washington.  My latest text says we have a tropical storm warning in the DC Area - I believe that means heavy rains and winds, hopefully not enough to do much damage. 

The league's exec team has been discussing proactively canceling all morning games on Sunday, and reserving a decision on afternoon games played on artificial turf.  They would make that call Friday night or Saturday.  Since our game is at 9:00 a.m., I would say we're not likely to play. 

However, the game is still on the schedule and we're mostly all here, so please wait to hear from me before you make other plans.
