Code Orange ends season with scoring blitz (corrected again!)

Code Orange went out with a bang today, sporting a 7-0 win.  The other team, bless their hearts, was not particularly strong.  If memory serves, goals were scored by Melissa, Griz, Carlos, Pete, Alyssa, Alec, and Vic. The goal of the match was clearly Patrick's distribution from the goalie position all the way over the top of the other team's defense.  Carlos collected the ball on the run and beat the keeper to the near post.  Wow.  I did get a goal myself too.  My scoring prowess was not exactly on display, however.  I missed quite a few opportunities.

It was a fun time.  Thanks to Tsunami for combining forces with us.  Let's look to do this again next summer.  We're heavy on guys a few weeks, but really we're constantly short players and we just need a relaxing atmosphere where organization, winning, etc etc are not the main focus.  So it works.

Good times.

Here are the results.  Our record was 3-4.  Two of our three victories were pretty darn close.  Our losses, not so much.  If not for the goals in the final game, it would have been super ugly in terms of goals.  Going into that last game, we had scored 3 goals in 6 matches, while giving up 16!  We ended with a GD of -7.  Andy, with two goals, was our leading scorer.  I think everyone else on the board only had one goal.  I'm sure we had an assist leader.  But I don't know who it was.  I didn't keep track today.

  • SUMMER 2010 (3-4, .429)

  • ---------------

  • 1-0 win on 7/11 to Armory/Divided

  • 1-0 win on 7/18

  • 4-0 loss on 7/25 to Buena Vista

  • 3-0 loss to Funky Prism on 8/1

  • 7-0 loss on 8/8!

  • 2-1 loss on 8/15

  • 7-0 win on 8/22

Enjoy the rest of your summer. Thanks to Mike, Alyssa, and Ally for helping to organize. See you in the fall!

Last summer league game - new time and place!

As you probably saw from Mike's email, our last summer league game was moved to a new field and time.  We will play at 2:45 at Wakefield High School in Arlington this Sunday.

Please note the change and update your RSVP on evite or to me or Alyssa pronto.

Go Code Orange!

Thanks!

Bring a white and a dark T-shirt to the game

I'm out for this weekend's game.  Unless someone picks the jerseys up from my house in Shirlington, we'll have to go with ordinary shirts for the game.  Bring one white shirt and one dark shirt to the field.

Good luck!

Physical conditioning tests ordered

We lost our second game in a row in summer league.

I guess we're going to have to take drastic measures.

As of today, every player is ordered to pass the Haynesworth conditioning test before re-joining the team.

Just kidding.

Good game last weekend.  We lost 3-0 to Funky Prism.  GK: Galen.

Hot and Cold

Wow was it hot today.

And we went cold.

We lost to Buena Vista Soccer Club 4-0.  It was probably 98-100 degrees, and about 105 on the turf.  It was enjoyable game.  We never really found that competitive streak or made tactical adjustments.  I think it was fun anyway.  We had some good balls.  We had several nice attacks and a goal called back due to offside.

I actually got the chills towards the end.  That's wierd.

Let's hear it for the goalkeepers who stepped up to make it more fun for the field players.  Thanks guys.

Notes: 4-0 loss to Buena Vista Soccer Club at Ridge, 7/25/2010.  GK: Nate (1st), Adrian (2nd).

Code Orange is going for three in a row

Let's hope we can beat Buena Vista Soccer Club this weekend and take three in a row.

I wasn't at last weekend's game, but I understand we won 1-0 on a PK won and taken by Andy. We think maybe the ball was played to him by Chris D. so we're going with that on the stat sheet unless someone sets me straight.

It's been a good season so far.

Notes: 1-0 win vs ??? on 7/18/10. Goal: Andy (PK, ball played to him by Chris D.). GK: Galen.

Much anticipated game ends in 1-0 win (corrected)

It was a much anticipated game. Two teams played before spectators and favored team took home a 1-0 victory.

No, I'm not talking about Spain's victory versus Holland in the World Cup Final. I'm talking about Code Orange's win versus Armory Divided in the first game of summer league.

We coasted to victory on the strength of Andy's late first-half strike. The rest of the game was somewhat uneventful. Only a few shots. Overall, we had the better opportunities and deserved the win. Andy's goal came at about the 35' mark. He made a move from the right wing and sent a hard and low shot to the near post. The keeper mishandled it and it dribbled into the net. That can happen when you test the keeper.

Did you enjoy the game?

I would say the story of the game was Mike B's comeback. The Tsunami captain has been sidelined for 18 months with some recurring knee injuries. He took a big step towards shaking those off. He looked good.

Notes: 1-0 win vs Armory Divided, 7/11/2010, W&L HS. Goal: Andy (Carlos). GK: Galen.

Code Orange!

Code Orange is the name of our summer team. It's a nod to the colors of both Goleros and Tsunami, with the obligatory Washington, DC double entendre. Code Orange is a threat-level on the Homeland Security awareness scale, as well as a term used by local weather folks for really hot and nasty days when the air quality sucks.

We won't be sucking, however.

We are ready to play. We signed a keeper this week, which makes our summer squad complete. Welcome Galen!

Now, if we only had a schedule. I am guessing it will come out soon. In any event, be read to play on Sunday, July 11th. I think we'll be sending out evites instead of the customary RSVPs on the blog that Goleros players are used to.

We are also doing a happy hour in the next couple of weeks at Cantina Marina. Stay tuned for more on that. Cat from the Goleros is organizing.

We will be providing the jerseys for the summer team - either Goleros' jerseys, Tsunami's or whatever.

All about summer league

The emails started this week. We're preparing for summer league. Most important, of course, is fees. Players on the team need to send me the $48 in fees right away. Use paypal and refer to my email for instructions.

There's more.

We need to name the team. Any ideas? So far, all we've got is "FC Sweetness", which isn't bad. Perhaps "Orange Wedges" to harken back to youth soccer and also to recognize the orange colors of both Tsunami and Goleros? Hmm, need more candidates.

Also, we need a full-time keeper, preferably a woman. Have any leads?

Update on Summer League

We're confirmed for Summer League. The roster is complete. Here's the message I recently got from the Commissioner:

Hi all ,

Just wanted to give a quick update on Summer League and
the basic plans. If you’re getting this email, you have reserved a spot
for summer session.

Some specifics:

Cost
will stay at $1400 and is due June 19th. That gives you two weeks to hound
your teammates for collection. Check should be sent
to:

Capital Coed Soccer League
P.O. Box 783
Arlington, VA
22216

There will be 7 games for the season on Sundays starting July
11th running through August 22nd and no playoffs
Standings will have no
bearing on Fall season promotion/relegation
There will be no games
conflicting with the World Cup Finals on the 11th
We will play 40 minute
halves with two referees
This is up from 35 minute halves that we normally
play during the summer because we have the field space. I figure if you
all are the die hards that actually want to play during summer, may as well get
as much as you can…

There will be an A and B Division depending on
team level.
The division split is still being worked out as I need to
fill two more teams still

Games will be all on Synthetic turf
fields either at Ridge Rd (DC) , Wakefield (Arlington), Washington and Lee
(Arlington) and George Mason High School (Falls Church)
Games at Ridge and
Arlington will be between 8:30a-5p and GMHS between 5-11p
We will be
spreading the game times across the teams so no team has to take the brunt of
melting with all midday summer games

Schedule will come out Week of
June 21st

We are allowing 30 people on the roster which will need
to be submitted to our registrar by July 18th. Forms to be provided
later.

I also wanted to say thanks to Lou, Jen, Andrea, and Jesse
specifically from the CCSL exec board for offering their valuable time to make
summer season happen. Its most appreciated!!

Anything else
you need/want to know, please just
ask….

Thanks!

Sanjay

Summer league update

Get ready to play!

We are pleased to announce that summer league is a go. We didn't have the people to field our own team after all. So Goleros and Tsunami, two similarly minded teams, are merging. I think it's going to work out great. Many of the usual suspects are returning. You got your Alyssa's, your Ally's, your Adrian's, and other troublemakers.

Details will follow. Games will start July 11th. The cost will be quite reasonable - probably $50 or less per person. Once we have to submit dues, we'll let you know.

Goleros seek spot in summer league

As you've seen from email, CCSL runs a less-structured, 7-game summer league with two divisions.

Based on strong interest, we have sought a spot in the league. We're going to try to occupy a slot all by ourselves, without merging with another team, and I think we have plenty of players to do that. Mergers are a nice way to accommodate multiple teams, but I don't think it worked very well for us, even though it was fun. You have leadership issues and a whole lot of field issues that come at the expense of improving team strategies and tactics. But we'll see. We might need players and we might be asked to make it happen.

In terms of divisions, I suspect we will be allocated to the lower division, since they usually put Premier and 1st Divsion teams in the upper division, and put the 2nd and 3rd division teams in the lower division. We will, however, seek to go to the upper division for experience.

Here's the email reply I sent to the commissioner on the subject.

More on this later. We will be asking for firm commitments and money some time this spring.

Sanjay -

The Goleros are in for summer league. At this time,
I expect to be able to field a full team without a
merger.

Regarding the World Cup, the only match that will overlap
with the season, according to the schedule you laid out, is the final. It
will be played on July 11th at 14:30 Eastern/ 20:30 Johannesburg.
Thus, some creative scheduling (all morning or evening games) should avoid
overlap. Also, if you have to schedule in the afternoon, you can put the
non-CCSL teams there!

Regards,

Peter

On Mon, May 3, 2010 at 10:13 PM, Sanjay Nayar

Hi all,

I wanted to get a sense of how many
teams would be interested in playing in a CCSL Summer league this year.
Remember that the World Cup will also be going on during this time so please
consider that when deciding yay or nay.

Some particulars:

Season would run from July 11th through Aug 22nd
Games would be only on Sundays
There would be 7 weeks of games only with no bye weeks
We would likely have 2 divisions: A & B distributed based on level
Results would have no bearing on promotion/relegation
Looking to cap at 18 teams max and CCSL teams have first dibs
Games would/could be at Ridge, Arlington (Wakefield), GW, and/or GMHS
Cost would be around $1400 as with previous
summer sessions

Teams are allowed to have 30 people on the roster
As before, merging of teams to form a single squad is perfectly legit
If you are interested in reserving a spot, please let me know by this Friday May 7th.
First come first served....

Summer league concludes (updated)

So, did you enjoy it?

Who's the MVP?

What should we think about for next year?

These are among the questions you must answer by replying to this post.

Good job everyone. We suffered another loss in our last game, but I think we found our fighting spirit and landed a few punches.

Adrian's goal from the field was dominant and gained the entire team a lot of respect at an important time. He followed it up with a nice PK. Well done, Ally, in getting us on the board with that first goal. Andy, you should be singled out for sticking with it in goal and making some good saves despite a faltering defense that left you 1-on-1 for most of those goals.

Girl's got moves

Thanks to our three captains - Ally, Alyssa, and Carey.

Hope to see everyone at happy hour tonight (Monday) at 6:00 p.m., Cantina Marina.

Good luck to everyone in the fall.

Rain dance

We should have done a rain dance before the game to get the gods on our side. Instead, they conspired against us to deliver a 4-3 loss in the final minutes.

We moved the ball effectively at times and folks played well. We had three nice goals, particularly the first and third, which made for a nice Sunday morning despite the rain. Lisa had a fantastic game in net and deserved at least the tie for her outstanding one-on-one save in the 80'.

Don't worry, be happy. Follow the example of the Red Tsunami ambassadors below, who are showing the love.

Looking forward to the next outing. I suggest we get organized early due to the DCU/Real Madrid game, which conflicts.

Comments are always welcome.

Have a nice week.

Notes [corrected] : 4-3 loss to White Team, 8/2/09, Yorktown HS. Goals by Carlos (Lena/Alyssa?), Pete (Lena), Nate (Adrian). GK: Lisa.

Busy bees

The Goleros have one of their busiest weekends ever - and yet there are so few of us to get the job done. At least half of the regular roster is out of town, but there are those of who remain, and who are determined to kick butt.

We play in the Coed Classic on Saturday and Sunday in Columbia. On Saturday, we have games at 9:45, 12:15, and 2:45 at the familiar Cedar Lane. On Sunday, if we advance, we play at 10:15 and 2:00 at Rockburn Park. I will be posting short blog updates on scores for the tourney, so make sure to check in.

Then, we have summer league. Red Tsunami plays its third game of the season at 5:00 p.m. at George Mason HS in Falls Church. If you're looking for details on that, check out Carey's post below.

What are the chances of a 6-game sweep?

You have to have a little faith.

Let's enjoy!

Red Tsunami falls to 1-1

Well played this weekend! I enjoyed the game. It's nice to get a chance to get some minutes during the summer. We played pretty well.

Any thoughts on the game? What can we improve for next week?

Great job by our keeper!
