CBT dates to be announced soon

Alex over at District Sports has informed us that the annual Cherry Blossom Tournament will happen on March 31st and April 1st of this year.  While the CCSL season will already be underway, we could request a bye that week and field a team.  It's only 7 on 7 and in all likelihood we could swing both a league game and a tournament engagement in one blowout weekend.  Tournaments are always fun, and they build up team chemistry in a major way.

I may sit this one out as organizer so volunteers should feel welcome to step up!

National Cup announced

The U.S. Adult Soccer Association, with which we affiliate, is hosting the annual National Coed Cup in Dallas this fall.  I doubt we could motivate to send a team, but it sure would be fun if anyone is interested.  Take a look at the details.

No go for the coed classic

Our streak of appearances in the Columbia Coed Classic will end. We can't field a team for next weekend without majorly pulling teeth or decimating our summer league team. Unfortunately, we're out.

We'll try again next year and look for a late summer or fall tournament possibility.

Coed classic team building slowly

We're building our Coed Classic tournament team slowly but surely. We have a few no's, a few yes's, and some silence. After this weekend, we're going to have to get the roster together.

Right now, it's just me, Mike, De, Ashley, and Anna. I know, we're pretty good, but I think we'd be better off with at least a full team.

Columbia tournament update

Since registration supposedly opened on April 1st, we have tried to register a team in the annual Coed Classic by Columbia Soccer. We're definitely planning to play. It will be our sixth consecutive appearance.

I haven't been able to reach the tournament organizer to confirm our registration.

Anyway, we will be putting a team together and there will be limited space. Let me know if you're interested.

The tourney is July 24th and 25th.

Interested in the DC Scores Tournament?

The Washington Freedom is hosting a 7 v 7 soccer tournament on July 10th at the Maryland Soccerplex in Gaithursburg. The event benefits DC Scores, a well-known soccer-related charity.

The entry fee is high ($850) but doable for a roster of 10 people ($85 pp).

1st CBT Appearance a Big Success

Here's your report from the CHERRY BLOSSOM TOURNEY 2010 on March 27. We'll have to upload photos later tonight since we're experiencing some technical difficulties now.


My morning started off rather early on Saturday (ehmm,...6AM!). I left my apartment in Alexandria and drove thru DC (basically past the monuments) to Silver Spring. Met up with the lovely De and took a cab back into DC. The cab driver was very confused as to why we had so much stuff if we were just playing soccer. We told him this is "how we roll." He had NO IDEA where the monuments were in DC (umm...what?) so we gave him directions. He then started blurting out random things like "Hey look at that rat dog" and other nonsense. It was a VERY entertaining cab ride into DC.


De and I checked in before even the first game of the tourney kicked off and waited patiently for our teammates to arrive.

Our first game set the tone beating our first opponent 3-1.


Second game was a tough battle and we unfortunately did not come out on top for that one losing to our opponent 3 -1.


After careful note taking and calculation, the Goleros decided we had to win our third and final game of the tourney by 3 goals with no goals against in order to advance. Not so much for our team, we ended up with 3-3 draw against the only undefeated team in our bracket with no goals against. However their undefeated and no goals against record went out the window the second half of our final game with the Goleros coming back from to tie the game 3-3.


Goleros Overall Record: 1-1-1

In between each game the team bonded while bundled up in layers and louging on beach towels. Buckey made the bike trip to Trader Joes to purchase lunch for the whole Goleros team. One Goleros female player asked Ally if "we could keep him." Buckey you are more than welcome anytime! :) And Josh, well, you were involved in 99% of the goals. Well done!


A few other funny moments throughout the day:
- I tuned in at the end of the convo however I believe there was quite the discussion regarding one night stands?
- Ally accidentally insulted one of the DC United reps by asking if his name was Francisco. Later he came back as the screaming eagle and took photos with us.

All and all it was a fantastic weekend of soccer and I would love to play (soccer) with all of you again in the CBT 2011 tourney! :)

Get Pumped Up!

Get pumped up! The season starts tomorrow. A little after 9:00 a.m., the Goleros will remove the cobwebs and get back on the pitch.

It all starts in the Cherry Blossom Tournament. We've got a great squad for this popular, but competitive tournament. Wish them good luck!

Then, on Sunday, at 3:00 p.m., we start the regular season campaign. We're playing our old rivals, Tsunami.

Please show up early and let's have a great season!!!

After much anticipation below is our schedule for CBT tomorrow:

I would like to ask everyone to be there ONE HOUR = 8:20 AM before the first game so we can do introductions, the refs can check ID's and sign the waiver that I have copies for everyone to sign.

I also have tournament t-shirts we have to wear when we play. Don't worry guys....we drew ORANGE for our team color....it's a sign!

What to bring:

*Seriously guys, I cannot stress enough how insane parking is going to be down there. I heard on the radio this morning that tomorrow is going to be the perfect weather for Cherry Blossom's so there will be a lot of people in the city. Sorry for not pulling the earliest game but at least we all have plenty of time to walk, bike or take the metro to the fields.

Here's Ally's email to the tournament squad. I made it pink to signify that Ally is a girl.

Come out to cheer on the team! We have several non-Goleros on the squad, which should make things interesting. Personally, I'm interested in meeting Daniel, who is Adrian's friend. In a humorous and long exchange of emails, Daniel cited some Supreme Court precedent in his replies to Adrian. That was pretty random for a soccer email.

What up? Is everyone as pumped as I am for CBT this
weekend?!?!?!

Please read below for reminders:

- Our
rosters will be checked against photo IDs before games. Because of this, please
arrive at least 20 min. before each game. Parking will be difficult, so please
take the necessary precautions to avoid tardiness. Players will not be permitted
to play unless they have had their IDs checked and any player participating for
a team that is not on the official team roster will result in forfeiture of any
and all games in the tournament. Thank you for your attention to these matters.-
Please don't forget that Thursday night is the official pre-tournament
draw/kickoff party at Town Tavern in Washington, DC. This should be a fantastic
time and a great way to get everyone ready for the

The money is pouring in...(dues)

There's a new sheriff in town, and her name is The Alligator. She organized our Cherry Blossom tournament team and threatened bodily harm to those who didn't pay the dues on time. It has worked. Most people have paid, with just a few outstanding.

As the principal of our finance and investment division (in other words, I write most of the checks), I am quite pleased!

I will formally announce the dues for the spring season in a separate post, but please feel free to pay them ahead of the March 28th due date. Several people have already! These everyday heroes include De, Ally, Anna, and George.

Team to open new chapter with Cherry Blossom Tournament

Ally and George have put together a great tournament squad for the Cherry Blossom Tournament.

I'm really psyched that we're fielding a team. I've heard it's a VERY competitive tournament, even though it's 7 v 7 on crappy mall fields. So we're going to give it a try.

We'll do our best to post the schedule here so you can come out to support the team.

We'll have a league game on that Sunday too, so it will be another all-Goleros weekend.

Goleros to play in Cherry Blossom tournament

Thanks to the initiative of George, Carlos, and our lovely lady captain, we are fielding a team in the annual Cherryblossom soccer tournament. I'm really glad this came together.

The tournament is 7 v 7, held Saturday and Sunday March 27-28th on the mall. Check out the website. It's not bad. There's even a page for the Goleros. There's not much there yet, just Ally's name!

Our roster is taking shape and hopefully we'll be competitive. We know it will be fun though.

As part of registration, we get 10 DCU tickets so we'll have something like a team outing on the designated game day. Stay tuned for that.

Tournament report: Don't give me that pouty face!

Take a look at this face. Carlos, a.k.a. the Silver Fox, is pouting upon upon learning that we didn't advance to the semi's tomorrow.

But it's not a genuine disappointment, he's just joking around. He knows we played great and rose to the occasion against a high level of competition. Seriously, after an off-and-on spring, we put together three great matches and it was a ton of fun. We reasserted ourselves on defense, moved the ball effectively, got wide thanks to strong wing play, and played great team ball. That's what it's about!

Quality score: 9.

This was our fifth consecutive appearance in the Coed Classic. Read about past exploits here. Follow the links in that post for some good memories.

This year, our record in the first round was 1-2. We dropped a competitive first match versus Fear the Turtle 2-0. In the second match versus Ignite FC, we made a statement in the first half with 4 goals. We added three more in the second half, yielding one, for a final score of 7-1. In the third and most competitive match, we faced Nova FC, which included several outstanding players that we know from various games and leagues. Lennon, their quality striker, netted an unstoppable one-touch volley early when we were down a player. He netted two more later in the game, but so did we. We pressured well and scored once in the first half, and again in the second by converting a PK won by Chris (Ermy converted). It was a fantastic rec match. Score was 3-2. We played so well, George even heard about it from across Howard County and came by to watch.

I truly enjoyed playing today - we have the coolest people on this team! Great way to spend a day. Count us in for next year!

Like Sisters

Special thanks to the team's Baltimore branch for sending us some great players and nice people. It was great to play with Julia again, and Holly and Matt were solid additions. Oh, if you all could only travel to DC for games!

Now it's back to finishing out summer league and preparing for the fall.

Busy bees

The Goleros have one of their busiest weekends ever - and yet there are so few of us to get the job done. At least half of the regular roster is out of town, but there are those of who remain, and who are determined to kick butt.

We play in the Coed Classic on Saturday and Sunday in Columbia. On Saturday, we have games at 9:45, 12:15, and 2:45 at the familiar Cedar Lane. On Sunday, if we advance, we play at 10:15 and 2:00 at Rockburn Park. I will be posting short blog updates on scores for the tourney, so make sure to check in.

Then, we have summer league. Red Tsunami plays its third game of the season at 5:00 p.m. at George Mason HS in Falls Church. If you're looking for details on that, check out Carey's post below.

Rules for the tournament

The tournament commissioner has posted rules for the upcoming tournament, if anyone cares. Your captains will explain the key rules, so don't worry. This is just for those avid readers of the blog. There are avid readers, right?

Columbia Coed Soccer Classic - 11-v-11 Rules

General
A team shall consist of 11 players. Seven (7) players are
required to start and continue a game, no more than six (6) of one gender on the
field at any given time.
Primary UNIFORMS shall be like-colored jerseys with
permanent numbers on the back (bring a permanent marker :).
Each team's
ROSTER is due 30 minutes before the team’s first game and is limited to 24
players. All names MUST be on the roster. Any set of individual awards for adult
teams will only have 18 items.
A player may play on only one team in the
tournament. Players not listed on an official roster may not play on any team.
The above rules apply for the entire tournament and any violation of these
rules will result in game forfeiture.

Game Play
All games are 60 minutes (2 x 30-minute halves). Round-robin
games will remain tied.
Slide-tackling is allowed in all divisions.
All
goals shall be scored as ONE (1) point.
Unlimited subs on your team’s
possession, after a goal and any goal kick, 1 sub on an injury.
A forfeit is
awarded (1-0) if a team is not present to play within 5 minutes of their
scheduled game time.
The HOME team, listed first on the schedule, MUST
change their jersey in case of any color conflict (as determined by the
referee). The AWAY team, listed second, MUST provide the game ball.
Penalties
‘Hot Head Rule’ - Yellow-carded players MUST sit out for 5
minutes but may be replaced by the same gender.
RED-Carded players may not
be replaced and must sit out for the game in which they're ejected and the
team's next scheduled game. Repeat red-carded players will be ejected from the
tournament. A team will play short by whichever gender was carded.
There are
no protests, all referee decisions are final.
Weather
All games will be
played as scheduled unless lightning or other conditions cause the referees or
park officials to suspend play. Games on the turf are only affected by lightning
only, not rain. Each coach is responsible for notifying his or her team of any
weather-delay, which will last 20-minutes. Play will resume in 20 minutes,
please have your team ready to play.
Unless modified by this set of rules,
all games shall be played in accordance with the current F.I.F.A.
rules.
Group Standings & Playoffs
Group standings will be determined
as follows: 3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, zero points for a loss.
Tie breakers will be determined as follows: (1) Head to head competition, (2)
Number of goals scored against, (3) Number of goals scored for, (4) Number of
'shutouts' (games where your team was not scored on), (5) 5v5 sudden death
shootout.
Bracket winners are eligible for the playoffs. Uneven brackets
will draw wildcards to fill available playoff spots. Wildcard teams are
selected based on total points, goals against, goals for, and # of shutouts,
sudden-death shootout.
Playoffs games ending in a tie after regulation play
will go straight to a shootout, no overtime.
The shootout will be a regular
5-vs-5 penalty kick shootout, followed by a sudden death shootout which
will continue until a winner is determined.
Each coach is responsible
for making sure the officials record the last 11 players on the field at the end
of regulation play. Only these 11 players may participate in the shootout. Teams
may begin with either gender but then MUST alternate genders throughout the
entire shootout period (i.e. if #5 was a man, #6 must be a woman).
Awards
ONE team trophy will be given to the championship and runner-up team in each
division.
