Sunday schedule still unknown

We will play our next match on Sunday afternoon or evening at George Mason HS in Falls Church.  The game time still hasn't been set. Based upon the feedback I got, we requested a 7:00 p.m. match, while also indicating a preference against the 3:00 p.m.  The scheduler reports that the 7:00 p.m. could be filled by another team.  So basically, we have no idea what time the game will be.  It will be 3:00, 5:00, 7:00, or 9:00.

Weather report

The early weather report for our game on Sunday is showing decent playing conditions.  The forecast calls for partly-cloudy conditions, 80 degrees, with only a 10% chance of rain.

Summer league is happening

As you may have seen, De has us registered for Summer League.  We are playing 11 v 11 on Saturdays and Sundays in Northwest DC.  The roster is more or less complete.  My guess is that we'll have trouble fielding enough players for certain games so, if you're not on the roster now, we may be in touch. 

Summer league is purely for fun; very relaxed from an attendance perspective.

Games are expected to start in two weeks - the weekend of June 23rd.

Far Post is Next Up

Your captains were on edge yesterday because we were missing a lot of pieces.  In fact, for the first time in a few seasons, it was clear before game time that we would not have a full squad for the entire match.  We started and finished with 10.

Unfortuantely for our opponent, Two Left Feet, they started with nine!  We were equal strength, 10 v 10, for most of the game, but 2LF went back to nine in the last 15 minutes.

Our quarterfinal matchup turned into a rout.  Two Left Feet didn't have an aggressive posture and they had their third and fourth-string goalies in net.  The result was 7 goals against.

We didn't get on the board for a while, but then scored two nice goals at about the 30' mark.  The first goal was the kind of scrappy goal-line battle that we have been losing.  The tide is finally turning and things are going our way.  Ermy and Jon put it over the line.  The second goal - Anna's fast cross to Ermy for an emphatic one-touch finish, set the tone.

The goals got better after that.  Ermy had two more; Griz showed some confidence with a hard shot off his right foot that froze the keeper; Anna finished nicely; Nate was there.  And who am I forgetting?

Oh yeah, George.  George is now in competition with Adrian for goal of the year.  Adrian scored on a set piece.  Harder angle but no one chasing him.  George scored from the two and half yard line in the corner.  Bender into the net.  He's a goalkeeper.  Where or where did that come from?  There were some kids up on the hill.  They were hooting after that goal.  Gollllllllllllllllll.

That game was penance for our loss to Far Post.  They got to sit home and watch the Euro while we played a quarterfinal game.  But now we're through to meet Far Post again.  They are motivated to advance too and will want to prove that their win last time was deserved.

Far Post had submitted a schedule request in advance of our game - looks like we're playing them at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity on Sunday. 

That works great...unless there is rain of course, in which case we'll be playing during the week at night.

USA vs Portugal was a classic

According to Steven Goff's blog, it's the 10th anniversary of the USA vs Portugal match.  Check out the highlights below.  To me, this is still the most exciting soccer game every played, perhaps one of the best sports matches I've ever seen.  It's not a pure thriller.  But I had recently become a die-hard US fan, and we never expected to make it out of the group.  Portugal was one of the best teams in the tournament, or so it seemed.  And we led the entire game!  Many of the US players were under 25 years old - it was a really young squad.  John O'Brien, Claudio Reyna and Brad Friedel were at their peaks - O'Brien would never play at a high level again because of injuries.

Carlos and I watched this game together at 3:00 a.m. in the morning at Summer's.

DCD wins - oh man, we really let them get by us easily.  Far Post did what they needed to do when they needed to do it.  Funky Town really underperformed.  As we saw in our game against them, they can play as a team and do quite well.

There are several surprises.  I can't believe Tsunami finished last.  They must have had one of those seasons like we did last year in which nothing went their way.  But to show you how unlucky we were, I believe we had 2 wins, while they had 0.  Celtic will be coming down too.  They had a nice run in second division.  They regularly go up and down.  Look for them to be highly competitive in Third Division when they're here.

FC Arlington finally woke up and pulled out of the Relegation Zone.  Our Kicks Don't Lie, which didn't have 2nd division chops going in, rose to the competition and finished in a playoff position.  That's what competition does for many teams.  You get better - because you have to be.

I didn't check out any details, but I think that Little Urban Achievers finished first despite what this table says.  They probably have a head to head win over Geezers.  They coasted through the last few games, not even needing any goals to secure a top position.

Mission Accomplished

Thanks to our team, Carlos has reached his fundraising goal for the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure. Well done team, we did it!  It's nice to give back to the Silver Fox, who has given us so much on the field.

Playoff schedule still TBD

We start the single-elimination tournament next Sunday, June 10th.  We don't have a game time or field yet.  I have requested a late start in case people are returning from out of town.  If we advance, we would play on successive Sundays.

On behalf of the players and coaches, I want to personally invite you to attend the U.S. Men's National Team public training session on May 28 at The University of Maryland's Ludwig Field at College Park, Md.
Admission to the training session is free, and will be held from 5-6 p.m. Gates will open at 4:30 p.m.
During the training session, the team will go through a full series of exercises in preparation for our match against Brazil.
It will be a fun and educational experience for soccer players, coaches, and fans to watch how the best players from the United States train and prepare for international competition. With all of the support you give our team, we feel it is important to share this experience with you.

League releases draft playoff schedule

Yesterday, the league commissioner announced the plan for playoffs.  For our division, it's just as we thought. Our quarterfinal game will be June 10th. 

Mark your calendars.

This is the remaining spring schedule:

-          Sun June 3^rd – Make ups / May do Quarter Finals for Division 1 (if not affected by make ups)
-          Sun June 10^th – Quarter Finals
-          Sun June 17^th – Semi Finals
-          Sun June 24^th -  Finals.

We're in the playoffs at the #3 seed.  We will play on Sunday, June 10th.  Nothing else is set.  We don't know the time, the place, or the opponent (Two Left Feet or unAthletic DC).

Standings: We have finished 3rd

There are still two games left to play in the division, but they don't matter for the top teams.  DC Divided wins the division and Far Post finishes second.  We are outside the tops spots, but we lead the rest of the pack.  We are third.  We have the same number of points as Gang Green.  But, given our head-to-head victory, we have the tie-breaker.  DC Thunder had a tie-breaker against us, but they failed to pick up the full three points in last weekend's game.  That puts us out of their range for their makeup game.

We are the #3 seed so we'll play the #6.  That spot will be filled by unAthletic DC if they win their makeup game (they have the head-to-head tie breaker) or else Two Left Feet.  The winner of our game will advance to play Far Post.

Goleros turn out the lights on Ridge

In the car on the way to the game, George and I were talking about how we like Ridge field.  George likes the quality of the pitch and the layout.  I enjoy traveling to a completely different community. I was just getting to know the broader neighborhood, having approached from a number of directions.  Fort Dupont park is a nice open space and I've become accustomed to the drive, especially since I use Minnesota Avenue and Ely Place.  Just last week, George's daughter and his wife were spread out on a blanket, enjoying the game.  This week, Heather's family and fiancee were there watching her patrol the wing from the stands.

But that's a wrap.  

The Goleros' 11:00 a.m. game today was one of the last CCSL event at Ridge.  The game after ours was abandoned after a security situation developed.  According to reports - both from the league and the Metropolitan Police - some teens made a brazen move to steal some soccer bags right in front of some players.  When the bags were recovered, the teens returned to the field with a group of "supporters" to cause a confrontation with all CCSL participants.  The police were called and everyone left the field.  The 3:00 p.m. game was played but with a police escort.

The league doesn't have any more games scheduled at the field for the season.  And I don't see it happening now.  That's too bad.  I doubt the vast majority of the nearby residents support the type of  threatening behavior that occurred.  What is more, Ridge is only $50/hour, compared with other fields that are $150 or more per hour.  Looks like it wasn't a pricing error after all.  I guess the discount reflects the risk. 

Bummer.

Stumbling into the playoffs

Oh, what could have been!

We missed an opportunity to finish in at least second place today, as we lost our last regular season game.  The score versus Far Post was 3-1; Far Post claims second on points.  We will finish in third or fourth depending on how DC Thunder finishes its last two matches.  If they collect six more points, they finish third and we take fourth, which would be a disappointing finish given our expectations.

We are stumbling into the playoffs.

With injury issues up and down the roster, we are banged up.  And we haven't shown well against quality competition.  We have given up the first goal against every team in the top half of the table.  In the second half of the season, we were 1-3, with a -7 goal differential.  Ugh.

Today's game was a good one despite the score line.  While the odds were stacked against us at the beginning of the match, because we didn't have any subs, we were the better team in the first half.  We dictated the pace, passed to feet, and showed confidence in all 11 players.  That didn't, unfortunately, yield any goals, which is how the season has gone for us.  Several cross bars and near misses.

But it was a different game in the second half as the defense got caught in space - without any goal cushion.  We gave up a first, then another, and then another when we changed shape to press forward.  They were each one on one's. Incredibly, Far Post even missed two sure things when they beat the defense and got behind George at the 18.  We did get a goal on a cross from Nate to Adrian, but we didn't pose any direct threats otherwise.

There is good news.  We have two weekends of rest.  We'll use the first (Memorial Day) to recuperate and the second (June 3rd, makeup date, we don't have a game) to return to form in a scrimmage against Little Urban Achievers.  There should be no thinking about "the finals" or anything of that nature.  We haven't earned that yet. There is only one game and that is our the first round of the playoffs on June 10th.  I foresee...victory!

Standings

Here are the standings going into our last game.  We are tied for the highest number of wins, but DC Divided holds all the cards to win the division - and they will win it.  They have a game in hand, a better goal differential, and most importantly, the head-to-head win.  Let it be said, however, that they need a full 3 points out of their next two games to beat us for sure.  Two ties do not guarantee them anything.

Our goal is second place.  We must win or tie Far Post this weekend to get there.  A loss will result in at least third place, possibly lower...although we have made the playoffs no matter what.  Gang Green will not finish above us.  The best they can do is tie us on points, but we have the head to head victory.  DC Thunder, however, has two games to play.  If we don't collect any more points in our next game, DC Thunder can surpass us on tiebreakers.  They will likely gain 6 points in two relatively easy matches for them, matching our point total, but they have the head to head tiebreaker. 

Second place is important for two reasons.  First, it gives us a bye in the first round of the playoffs.  It's always easier to win a 2-game tournament than a 3-game tournament.  Granted, we've never done that, but I know we can.  Second, as we talked about extensively last year, the second place finisher will be considered for promotion if the first place finisher also wins the playoffs.  Generally, the first place finisher and the playoff champion are considered for promotion (in that order), but if those two achievements are made by a single team, the second place finisher in the regular season is next to be considered.

So we have a lot to play for, but at the same time, it's not the end of the world so let's go out there and have fun against what has always been a good team, Far Post.

Note two things in the standings.  We are doing great in goal differential.  We have the second highest number of goals and the second fewest goals against.  Can we end the season in the number one spot for either of those categories?  It's worth a try.

Summer League is around the corner

As you've seen on email, we're going to try to get a spot in a summer league.  We want to keep playing and stay in shape.  De is running this thing.  If you're interested, make sure to let her know before we backfill the roster with other folks.

The league will start on June 17th.  Costs will be pretty reasonable.  Games in DC on the weekends.

Some history

Yesterday's win versus Gang Green was a good one - a 3-2 come-from-behind win.  It got me thinking.  It's been a while since we've seen that team, but we have, in fact, seen them on a number of occasions.  I searched our blog.  Until recently, I didn't tag team names on the game reports so it was a basic and unreliable word search.  Anyway, I found two games, and I remember them both.  Those two games plus the one we played last weekend all followed a similar script.

In the spring of 2009, we were a pretty decent side but we hadn't distinguished ourselves in the standings.  We faced a must win in the final week to get into the playoffs.  Gang Green came out strong and led us most of the game.  I remember taking the field and shouting that this was it for our season if we didn't step up.  I have no idea what effect that had, but we had one of our great all-time finishes.  We scored two in the waning minutes to get ourselves into the playoffs.  Meg got her first goal for the club and then Adrian did something special to win the game.   I remember Adrian taking a ball and just going all the way to goal with it.  Their defense faced so much pressure in the second half, they finally cracked.  Adrian scored a great 90th minute goal.  Read about it here: http://golerosteam.blogspot.com/2009/06/adrian-propels-team-into-playoffs-with.html.  

In the fall of 2009, just a few months later, we had a similar situation where we earned a 4-4 result that was also come-from-behind.  I recall one of the Gang Green players congratulating us because we never gave up and they just couldn't find a way to beat us.  That was saying a lot because they won the division that season and went up to First Division.  They were there for a while, but took our place in Second Division when we moved down recently.  Now they fell again to Third Division - probably because of attendance. 

We may see them in the playoffs.  Let's be ready.

For Gema

The one and only Silver Fox

She was born in Havana.  She had an amazing son when she moved to Miami to start a new life.  Her name is Gema Ginoris Maceo.

I know she is proud of her son, Carlos, a guy who puts his heart into everything, especially football.  Today, Carlos scored the winning goal to end our two-game slump and book our ticket to the playoffs.  That one was for mom on this Mother's Day.

Carlos exemplified our team approach today.  We were pretty good all game, although our offensive struggles followed us well into the second half.  Nevertheless, a goal down, we kept pressing and got some goals that had been really eluding us.  

The first was the result of sustained pressure - we finally got a break after several games.  The second goal was a piece of magic by Jon.  While I approached the area unchallenged, my options were diminished.  Jon made a fantastic slashing run.  I found his feet in a small piece of real estate.  His first touch on the run was amazing.  He made a move and bent it around the keeper to the far post.  That was a piece of skill alright.  Carlos' goal - he was well positioned for a rebound and took his shot nicely across the goal - felt like insurance when it happened.  But when we surrendered one more with about 12 to play, it turned out to be crucial.  Carlos played end to end today.  [Nate added this explanation: I took the ball to the left corner, cut back and meant to cross into the box - I screwed up big time and crossed all the way to the other side of the field. Lindsey was there, crossed to Carlos who was on sides despite the outcry from Gang Green and Carlos did put his shot in off the post from six yards out. Similar to the first goal, we scored the last goal because people attacked at the right time and were persistent. ].

So, with good play by everyone and a nice introductory performance by Lindsey, we finally earned a win.

The previous two weeks were disappointing.  Our match versus DC Thunder was a killer (4-1 loss).  George saw red for allegedly denying a goal scoring opportunity (he made a great and clean play!) and our defense was completely broken down.  DC Thunder's goals were generally unmarked "tap ins."  And we couldn't put much on the board to counteract those issues - you can't expect to blank DC Thunder.  We've never done it.  Even though we had the right formations and made the right tactical moves, we couldn't make an impact.  There were two small positives.  Cheryl assumed a huge responsibility as central midfield and shined brightly.  She was the only player with an answer to Roland.  And Suzie was back from injury, looking pretty good.  That's a big deal.

Our match versus DC Divided was much better.  We had about 5 heart attack moments in the first half when last ditch saves were necessary after repeated jailbreaks, but we escaped with only 2 goals against at the half.  Nap led the team to make a critical tactical adjustment by stacking our midfield and taking their #10 out of the match.  We didn't give up any real opportunities after that.  Nap and Elyse were field marshalls who returned the better possessions and opportunities to us - Nap plays slightly deeper than Elyse.  It's a 1-2 punch and fun to watch.  It must harken back to the college days.  Anyway, Adrian had subbed for George in goal and kept us in it with some killer saves off his line, but with 20 to go and nothing on our score sheet, we needed his possession.  We brought him out of goal and he made an immediate impact in the field.  He forced a keeper error and scored.  It wasn't enough in the end as we couldn't find that last pass.  DC Divided is the presumed winner of the division at this point, and that win will have a lot to do with it. 

This coming weekend is going to be interesting.  I think the pressure is off us. We have 15 points already and we're going to the playoffs.  First place isn't likely and won't be in our hands.  I will look at scenarios a bit later.  I can imagine we will likely take 2nd with a win.  That would be good enough for a bye.

First look at the standings

Hi team -

Our loss last weekend was not determinative of anything, as it turns out.  No other teams had managed to collect all available points, so now instead of being overtaken by an insuperable margin after losing, we are instead thrown into a wide open race.  We are still in control of our destiny and can win it.  Our schedule is teed up perfectly this season.  The head to head matchups in these final weeks are key.

Far Post sits atop the standings with that extra point - they tied instead of lost the one game in which they left points on the table.  If both of us keep winning, we will meet in the last week to decide who takes first.


But, of course, let's not get ahead of ourselves.  We must play DC Divided this weekend and then Gang Green.  Both are performing quite well and both are probably going to make for the toughest opponents yet.  We will have to play better to win those games.  DC Divided has almost as many goals as we do, and the same amount of goals against.  Yet they have played a harder schedule and one fewer game.  We haven't played Gang Green in years, but when we used to play them in the Second Division, they were quite good.  Those games went until the final minutes.  In fact, they took first one season (while we took second), which launched them to First Division.


This could be a tight race.  We are going to fight hard!
