Jon & Missy

This is a big week for Jon & Missy, two of my favorite people.

On Saturday, they are getting married in the area.

After that, they're off to the Caribbean. This, apparently, is some kind of excuse for Jon not making our April 18th game (?).

I'm sure you would agree that Jon & Missy are great together. Personally, I couldn't be happier that they are getting married. I wish them the best.

Missy is our #1 Fan. She's at the games. She shows up to the happy hours. She talks Jon down when he gets a little too worked up.

I'm worried about two things though. First, let's hope she doesn't change her mind in the next few days because Jon is a seriously lucky man. Second, let's hope when they're married that we still see get to see Missy. It's pretty common for the wives to drop out of the soccer scene once they secure the union; they're interest in watching a group of adults struggle to kick a ball dissipates. I've seen it a million times. And I speak from experience. While I have all the support in the world at home for my soccer endeavors, I do get quite a few teasing remarks thrown my way when the Goleros texting network goes into high gear on Sundays.

Anyway, feel free to use this space to commemorate the occasion for our friends. Congratulations to them both!

No longer a bachelor

At this very moment, Georgie boy is getting married to Megan. They met at work, proving that there is apparently an upside to being an auditor at a major accounting firm.

Three cheers for the happy couple!

George, it took a lot to tame you but it has been done!

The festivities are being held in Charlottesville, and our own Carlitos is there. We'll expect a full report tomorrow from our man at the scene.

On Tuesday, George and Megan are headed to the Bahamas for their honeymoon.

All the best from the team!

A fine engagement

Congratulations to Jon & Missy, who are now engaged if you haven't heard. I haven't been clued in on the details. Jon doesn't have a wedding blog that I'm aware of.

Anyway, this is great news. It was pretty smart of Jon to associate himself with Missy, a really great woman and our 2008 Fan of the Year! I think he's figured this out. In my experience, he goes after what he wants. Take our last game as an example. He stormed up the right wing and sunk a 40-yard shot over the goalie because he was tired of the guy playing so far off his line. I think it's fair to say that the engagement story is more romantic, but you get the point. He didn't hesitate because they'll be great together.

Congratulations to you guys. You are the latest Goleros love story.

All the best

Our friend and teammate Courtney has big news. She got married to her boyfriend, Scott, two weeks ago in Olympia. Megan alerted me to this little piece in the New York Times style section about the big event:

We began covering this story in this earlier post about wedding bells. Looks like everything worked out great.

There's more news. But it's not so peachy for the team. Courtney and Scott are moving back to Washington State, so it appears that Court will soon file her retirement papers with me. We knew it was coming, we hadn't seen her on the field in a while. Based on our last conversation, it seems that she'll already be gone by the time our party comes around on the 22nd. I hope to cross paths with her in Denver at the end of the month.

Good bye Courtney, we love you.

All the best.

Goleros alumni weekend

It was a Goleros alumni weekend.

On Saturday night, I attended two "alumni" events. The first was Nick & Kara's engagement party held at Cafe Citron, a posh spot in Dupont. They don't usually let my kind in. I had a chance to see many of our old friends from Frightening Pace. As you remember from my earlier post, Nick & Kara moved to Denver and have a nice life there in their downtown apartment. They were back in town to celebrate their upcoming Boston wedding with friends. Kara and I both work for the same federal agency now, so we'll probably see each other from time to time. Congrats to the happy couple, we miss them!

Later that evening, after a quick stop at Ben's Chili Bowl, I went to Rachel's birthday party, also in Dupont, but closer to the U Street corridor. Rachel is an original Goleros player - and the only player ever to have started with us completely from scratch. She learned quick and was a lot of fun to play with. She's back in DC after an assignment on the Clinton campaign in New Hampshire. She's doing great. As you can see, Megan was at the party too. Megan and Rachel are two peas in a pod. Megan and her sister Molly had spent the day painting for DC-area schools (read about it here).

A love story

We are proud to announce the engagement of Tom and Anne.

This is a very happy moment. Tom is an original Goleros player, a committed and multi-talented individual, and a good friend of your Captain. Now Tom is going to marry a wonderful woman who we have come to know and love as "Anne from the Yellow Team."

It's a Goleros love story.

In 2004, Anne and Tom reportedly met briefly at a party one night. Then, only days later, they faced each other in a soccer match at Falls Road Local Park in Potomac, MD. Anne played on the Yellow Team (made up of American U law students) and we were the Goleros of the Montgomery County league. We can remember Anne focusing more on Tom than the game. On a particular corner kick, Anne was busy talking to Tom and not picking up her man. We won the game and Tom won a date with Anne.

And forever after they made a great couple. They were recently engaged on a vacation. For those of you who don't know Anne, she is among other things a soccer player. She's also a bright and successful lawyer for a well-regarded firm. With all of her travels and experience with international transactions, perhaps some day she can represent Goleros if and when we get into the international transfer market.

Let's raise a glass for Tom and Anne. We wish the happy couple the best!
