Parking situation: difficult

I love playing on the mall.  The fields suck but the atmosphere is great.  Unfortunately, though, parking is a bit of an issue.  There's always a lot of people down there on weekends.  The later the game, the harder it is to find parking.  I've heard there is a Washington Post event on the mall plus some graduations.  Parking will be tight.  Parking in the government district (18th, 19th, 20th, 21st and Virginia) might work.  You could also try the Jefferson memorial.  If you drive down, make sure to leave really early.  It could take 30 minutes or more to park and walk in.

Better to take metro and walk in from Smithsonian or Farragut West.  

Leave early folks.

I rented a bike in the hjstoric area of town and toured the hutong, the narrow traditional alleys of Beijing that are fast disappearing due to insane and unchecked development. The old way of life is being confined to few tourist zones. I bked in some amazing alleys today. They'll probably be gone by my next visit. The ones I saw last tine are gone.

Weather report

The forecast for this weekend is pretty iffy.  I give us about a 60% chance of playing on Sunday.  It's all about the field conditions.  We're on grass so make sure to call the inclement weather line if you have a question.  Unless you hear that the game is canceled, show up!

Hey all,

just a couple of things to mention this
week

1) Rosters

Thank you all for getting your rosters
in on time - we didnt have to have a single forfeit last week which is
what we had hoped. Remember, from here on out, you cannot use a
player that was not included on that official roster submission. Referees
reserve the right to check. To reiterate, this is not to handcuff your
teams to not be able to field or squad, or solely to keep from bringing in
ringers, but rather as an insurance issue to make sure the league has all its
players covered under its policy. Unregistered players put us at
significant risk.

And a big thank you to Jen Roberts for spending
her time herding the cats and compiling everything for us to meet our State
association deadlines.


2) Trinity &
dogs

Over the past few weeks, more and more people have been
bringing dogs to Trinity. Simply dont do it. If you have friends and
family coming to watch your game, make sure to tell them not to bring
Fido. We have a great relationship with Trinity and breaking clear rules
like these starts to hurt that. Oh and keep not peeing in the woods - nice
job with that one....


3) Nets/Flags

Every
week we have a net/flag snafu where teams either dont bring their equipment or
didnt know they needed nets, etc. Its the bane of my existence to spend
time unraveling these mysteries of life as to who has the extra set. Some
simple rules to live by:

Bring the nets/flags to every game even if
you think there will be nets and flags already on the pitch
If the team after
you doesnt have thier equipment to swap out, you are well within your right to
take down the net and go home. If you choose to do the sporting thing and
let the subsequent teams play leaving you without equipment, it is on you to
work with those teams to figure out the swap. Everyone has the captains
list and can contact the teams directly. The exec committee does not need
to be involved.
If your captain is going to be out of town, make sure
to make arrangements to have someone else on your team bring the equipment
We
do have one team missing a net right now, so if you have an extra net or flags,
please let me know.

4) Marina field (swamp)

The Marina
field has essentially been unplayable this season with all the rain. We
have moved all games this weekend from Marina to the Mall (Lincoln #1) and in
all likelihood will move all Marina games to LMRP for the rest of the
season.

Keep an ear out for the weather line again this
weekend as weve got a little rain going down again.

Let's plan a big night out

On the field, we're in a groove.  It's been a great season.  

Off the field, umm, it's sucking.  We haven't done much.  

It's time to end that.  Let's meet for drinks.  And I'm hoping it's on a Friday so we go out big.  I have precious few opportunities to have one of those nights.  In June, there will come a day When Life Changes and my nights will be spent(happily) at home.  Maybe we can time it when Jackal is in town.

What was the key to our goals and goal-keeping? Did you like that sequence on the third goal? What do we need to work on?

I thought it was a good game by both teams. Tsunami plays well as a team and they very sporting. They probably should have sunk the first goal in the match. We did well to keep them off the board until late.

Next week, we have a bye. The next game is May 3rd at 11:30 a.m.

League wide social tentatively scheduled for June 4th

The plan is to have a happy hour or tailgate before the DC United game.  This is a Thursday night.  Tickets will be a mere $20.

Anyone interested in scrimmaging to keep fit?

We can do a couple of things. We can plan for Sunday morning early and try to get some field space at one of the public fields - perhaps TJ Middle School in Arlington, the mall, or a field in Courthouse. Or we can try to scrimmage during the week, preferably Friday, after work. If you ask me, that would be best.

Let me know your preference if you're interested.

Upcoming friendly..but it conflicts with the Neptune

DC United is looking to set up a friendly versus Real Madrid at FedEx Field on August 8th. I'm totally going. Unless our team is headed down to the Neptune, which I'm still hoping for.

I'm just letting you know of the conflict.

I'd like to hear more from folks about the Neptune in Virginia Beach. Would you be game?

Be early, not late. We don't want to start short. If Tsunami gets on a roll, they will be hard to beat. Let's not forget that they cruised through the Third Division in the fall with a near perfect season.

Off to the races

We're off to a good start.

Never before have we scored so many goals in the first two games, at least not to my knowledge. We came out and sunk 5 goals in a highly competitive first game versus DC Thunder. We got 4 more last week versus Armory. As Nate mentioned, we're tied with Red Devils for the most goals scored (9) across all divisions.

But...that's only half the story. We're also tied for the most goals against (9, along with Red Stripe). Those crazy numbers have left us with a 1-1 record and 3 points in the table. Not bad. Plenty of room for improvement though. We'll ratchet up the defense, work on stopping counter-attacks, and just keep doing what we're doing on offense. Our attack has been fluid and dangerous. We have a lot of people involved, yes, but one player is really converting for us: Chris. The all-time Goleros scoring leader has an incredible 12 points at the quarter mark. It's worth noting that four women have points as well: Ally, Kate L., Meg and De. I bet that's tops in the league too. Props to Kate and Meg, who picked up their first points in an orange jersey.

Our first match versus DC Thunder and the prolific Roland was a lot of fun (3/29). The wind aided in the 11 goals that were scored on both sides of the ball. We had the higher quality goals - and I can think of two excellent shots from longer range that were close to going in. Our goals against were the result of minor breakdowns that do not often result in goals, but against Roland, did.

Our second match versus Armory was and up-and-downer (4/5). We started short but took command of the game with superior teamwork. Then, I am told, we gave up a string of 3 goals. It wasn't enough to break our spirits. We finished with a nice goal at the end of the game.

Get ready for the next stretch of the season. Let's keep having fun.

Interested in the Coed Classic?

Jason over at Columbia Soccer is planning to host the Coed Classic again this year. The weekend will be July 25-26th.

Should we make our fifth consecutive appearance? Are you ready to avenge our losses last time?

I hope we field a team. We will most likely prioritize the Neptune, but there's no reason we can't enter in both tournaments.

Tournament Information

o Welcome! Columbia Soccer will host the area's largest adult coed soccer tournament in late July. This tournament hosts teams from New York to North Carolina and features some of the best coed soccer teams on the East Coast. Please visit us at www.columbiasoccer.com to discover more details.

Divisions: There are 3 divisions - Open, Intermediate and Rec. The tournament is open to all coed teams at any level and individual players as well.

o Format: Regulation games are 60-minutes long with a 5 minute halftime. Teams in each division are guaranteed 3 regulation games. Teams accumulate points based on wins, losses and ties and the top team from each group/bracket will advance to a single elimination playoff round. Division champions receive 18 individual awards (like t-shirts) and a trophy, finalists receive one team trophy.

o Registration: Please visit us at http://www.columbiasoccer.com to register. We encourage you to register now, you still have plenty of time to collect and send the registration fee. Registration will be open from May 1 - June 30th. The cost is $425 per team (includes ref fees).
