The US women steamrolled England last weekend by a score of 3-0. This puts them in the semifinals tomorrow against Brazil. There are only 4 teams left in the tournament: USA, Brazil, Norway, and Germany. Each are playing really well so there are no automatic wins. The US women have raised their game from the average performances they turned in the opening round. Coach Ryan showed some coaching acumen in taking England's outstanding player, Kelly Smith, out of the mix. But Marta (pictured above) is on fire, and will be hard to mark. The Brazilians - who get precious little support at home - play with heart, if not structure. If they are able to maintain possession of the ball, watch out. What are your thoughts on the US team this year?
The game is at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow on ESPN2. Here's to a win and yet another chance to take the WWC title.
Germany v Norway is tomorrow, which is good to watch to see who the US might meet in the final.
ReplyDeleteUS gets and extra day of rest and plays Thursday, which they desperately need. I think the US has not subbed well. The starters were tired, hopefully they are recharged now, because the coach doesn't seem to trust anyone else to play.
The US has had the toughest games of the tournament. Germany got off a little easier with their group and their quarter final. With the 4-3-3 formation I think the US is not dominating the midfield like they should - they are just wearing out their opponents with balls over the top to Abby.
I predict US 1 Brazil 0

i agree that they haven't subbed well. they hardly ever bring anyone in with any substantial minutes left in the match.
ReplyDeleteBUT, apparently ryan isn't afraid to shake things up. scurry will start in goal, per my next post.
By the way, this photo is not of Marta.
