At last, we are back in form.We struggled out of the gate this season, but last night, it was back to the good ole days in a 2-0 win versus Red Tape. The score does not tell the full story, because we controlled the match from the kickoff. We were strong in all aspects of the game - except perhaps shooting away from the keeper (their keeper played well, notching about 20 saves on the night).
We scored one goal in each half. In the first half, Red Tape had several impressive goal-line saves until Adrian received a pass from Jon in the penalty area and converted. The Goleros D was rarely tested but was able to disrupt a very few troublesome breakaways - Hans, a Red Tape striker is quite capable of scoring. In the second half, Chris and Jer found each other, allowing Chris to score at relatively close range. In the meantime, we had taken lots of shots.
Liam earned himself the shut-out by making a charging, one-handed save in the last 15 minutes. It was particularly impressive because he hadn't been involved in the game a lot.
Congratulations everyone, good game. It puts at 4-0 lifetime against Red Tape. It's noteworthy for other reasons too:
- It's our first legitimate win of the season (!)
- We have battled back to .500 with a 2-2-2 record
- We improved in the standings, but it's not clear by how much. The website is currently showing us as tied for 3rd, but that's not correct because several games have not been accounted for among the contenders.
- I thought our women played very well and were quite physical. Our new recruits are making a difference!
- We used a lot of different combinations on defense, with similar and consistent results.

I assisted on that 2nd goal, a looping chip to Chris over the defense.
ReplyDeleteIt's true; he did. I almost blew it, but thankfully, his good pass was rewarded by suspect defense. Additionally, it should be noted that Jackie was streaking (well, as fast as she can streak) to the near post and drew the defense's attention as I lay unmarked at the back post. It was a good team effort and a just result.
ReplyDeleteAdditional props should be given to our women. For the most part in our league, the men from each team cancel each other out, so having quality women really can make a difference. I thought every one of them played great. Special kudos goes to the lady who deked Hans out of his shorts in the first half with that sweet move; I honestly don't think it could have been done any better!
Gotta agree with Chris on that sweet move on the sideline that left Hans with his shorts at his ankles. Probably the best pure foot skill move any Golero has made this year. And of course, like Chris, I just can't remember her name.

Pete, maybe we need a special blog post for Goleros player of the week. That move sealed it in my book. Even the other team was blown away by it.
That's Heather. Yeah, quite a move over there on the wing. And it's not the first one, although it's definitely the best. She's making a lot of contributions. I can recall a certain professional foul against Capital Crew that impeded a goal scoring opportunity.

I applaud their keeper on a strong game. He made very good decisions and stopped a lot of our chances, but in the end, we earned 'em. Nice game!

ReplyDeleteIf we have a Golero player of the week, I suppose I would have to throw my support behind Jackie. Not only did she pull off the mystic I'll-head-the-ball-with-my-shins move, but she also half mooned me prior to kick off.
ReplyDeleteLooks like we are still in 7th place even after the win. The standings show us in 6th, but Celtic's score against Two Left Feet is not recorded (in a game they played from September). Two Left Feet hasn't won a game in the four games that they've recorded so I imagine they either lost or tied Celtic. If that game was a win or a tie for Celtic, they would be in 6th place by virtue of either points in the case of a win or goal differential in the case of a tie.
ReplyDeletesorry...actually, if Celtic won their game against 2LFeet then they would be in 3rd place. If they tied, they would be in 6th behind Tsunami because Tsunami beat Celtic.
