Each year, the WP compiles all MLS player salaries, which are probably leaked by the players union. Salaries continue to creep up, and parity is still a big problem. Veterans have gotten themselves easily into the 100K/200K/300K range, while players with development status make as little as $12,900! $13K a year?
Check out the link here.
Who do you think is the most overpaid? Underpaid? My votes:
Overpaid - Cuatemoc Blanco ($2.7M), Clint Mathis ($410K), Santino Quaranta ($105K), Eddie Johnson ($875K), Greg Vanney ($237K).
Underpaid - Bobby Boswell ($30K), Briang Ching ($220K), DeWayne DeRosario ($157K - best deal in MLS), Dominic Oduro ($17,700), Troy Perkins ($87K).
Take a look at LA's payroll compared to other teams. How do they swing that? With the new international exception instituted last year - the so-called David Beckham rule.
Here's DC's payroll:

Two from the Rapids that are very underpaid.

GK Coundoul, Bouna $30,000 $30,000
Both starters and arguably the best players on the team so far this year, combined, their salaries don't even crack six figures.
There are probably bargains on every team, but these are the two from the Rapids.
Boswell chose to keep his low salary this year...the last year of his contract...in hopes of landing a bid European contract (if he had resigned for more money MLS contracts are hard to get out of).
ReplyDeleteBen Olsen is underpaid.

Probably a good idea for Boswell, but I sense that he's still 1 full season away from being signed to a big club. The world has very little exposure to him. Really, just one lousy Copa America game.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Gomez is underpaid on the Rapids. That keeper has still some time in order to see if he's up to snuff. We train good goalies here.
